The Last Duck

On April 20, 2009, I headed out to the duck pond to see if any of our northern friends were still here. All I could find was one lone duck. There were lots of coots, egrets, herons, alligators, and other birds however. This collection contains the best shots from the evening.

These images are sized to 1220 by 810 pixels, which displays well on a large wide-screen monitor. I also uploaded the photos to a PicasaWeb slide show that resizes the images to match the resolution of your display. Click here to jump to PicasaWeb.

While I focused on him, he focused on my big toe. The moral of the story is...never wear sandals when photographing alligators.

That's a coot not a duck. There were lots of these things out there.

I must have been just one day too early to catch the full blooms.

Here she is... the LAST DUCK. All the others were gone. In January the pond was covered with these things. That's a female Mallard.

See the lady bug at the top right on the flower. I love the colors.

Buzz... making honey.

Just a lucky shot with my old 300mm lens.

I am almost certain he said "Hi Ross!" (I was wearing my CFLsurf tee shirt).

Surf Photographer Suzanne with her famous Nikon D50.

He got extremely indignant and swam away when I asked if he was "a Florida State Gator". Perhaps I phrased the question wrong?

I have white ones that look like this guy that dig around in my front yard, but this one was much more photogenic.

This is my new computer desktop background picture. It works out just right with all the icons positioned around the edge.

As it got late, I began to think about dinner. From that beady look in his eye, I am guessing maybe he was thinking about dinner to.

Two egrets were building a nest in the top of a palm tree.

About 30 minutes before dark, a steady stream of egrets became to trickle in. This must be home.

I use a Nikon D90 with an old 70 - 300mm Nikkor zoom lens I got for $100 on Ebay.

More coots, no ducks.

I don't know if it was the sky or my lens that made the ring around the sun, but I thought it looked pretty cool.
