Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica - March 2009

Why go to Playa Hermosa? For most or you the answer would be "to surf", of course. And it looked like many of the people there had the same idea. But others were there just to enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica. On this page and in the companion slide shows I will try to portray Playa Hermosa from both perspectives - a great place to surf, but also a great place just to relax and enjoy the beach, observe the wild life, and relish the scenery.

There are three companion slide shows:

Playa Hermosa 2009 - 337 shots of scenery, surfing, wildlife, people, and places.
Hermosa Mike - 23 shots including some EPIC barrel shots.
Hermosa Longboarding - 61 shots illustrating that longboarding can be fun at Playa Hermosa (under the right conditions).

Florida Danny doing what he does best!

Although Playa Hermosa is primarily known as shortboard break with crunching big barrels as in the top picture, sometimes at the right tides and spots (and when there is some angle to the lines), it can be plenty of fun on a longboard. The two barrel shots were taken about 3 miles south of the main Playa Hermosa Beach at a place named Tulin. The longboard shot was taken right out in front of the Surf Inn Hermosa.

That's the Cafe Hermosa up top on the third floor. What a view!!!

We stayed at the Surf Inn Hermosa , which is located slam on the beach right in the middle of the main Playa Hermosa surfing area. The Inn just opened in January 2009. The pictures show it from the road and from the beach. A restaurant (the Cafe Hermosa) occupies the third floor and provides an awesome view of the ocean. Those rafters and the ceiling are made out of teak (with what we would consider to be cabinet-grade wood). The food at Cafe Hermosa was absolutely delicious!

That's the moon! This shot is from the balcony near our room around 5:00 AM.

That big tree is famous.

Even in March, first light shows up around 5:00 AM. I don't like to miss the sunrise, so I was out there each morning with my camera waiting for just the right lighting and colors.

Sunset comes early also. By 6:30 PM there isn't much light left.

We saw lots of Macaws flying around. These two came and foraged in a tree right beside Cafe Hermosa.

Whales!! Great big ones. An entire clan of them. They were perhaps 500 to 600 yards off shore.

These things were all over the place. I thought he would chew the fruit off this slice of mango. Nope.. one gulp... down the hatch!!!

High skill-level locals cutting up. They were cris-crossing for the entire wave. This is Playa Esterillos at high tide.

Nosara is way out there on the far side of that distant mountain.

We had to do something besides surf one day, so we took the boat ride tour. The monkeys are wild, but seem very well fed.

Try it over there, Dad!

Christina built the Surf Inn Hermosa. It took a few years. Now she runs the day to day operations and will handle your reservations.

Coconut French Toast at the Cafe Hermosa!

Going down on the beach every evening for the sunset is simply a must-do for us Florida East Coast folks.

This is a sunset view from Cafe Hermosa looking way up the beach with a 300mm lens. It looks like fun out there. All the sunburned folks come out late in the PM. There usually aren't many boards out in the heat of the day.

The final sunset on the last day of the trip. We plan to go back soon!
