Return to Nosara, Costa Rica - Aug 2005 - Page 1 of 2
I think this is the first time I have ever stayed twice
at the same place, let alone the same hotel. But here we are again at
the Hotel Playas de Nosara on an August morning. As you can see above,
the surf was in the "fun" range.
|
Although it doesn't look very big out there, it was
probably about 6 foot on sets this morning. Ah... new board, new baggies,
nice waves, what a day!
|
We had 2 days of 6 to 8 feet, and the rest at about
4 to 5 feet. On our big longboards, it was more fun in the smaller waves.
On the bigger days, if you stayed inside, every few minutes a real crunching
set would come along and really beat you up.
|
It may look crowded, but the zoom lens distorts things.
There are perhaps 35 boards spread out over about a one mile long surfing
area. Size seemed to fall off for lower tides like this.
|
My job was to turn on the coffee pot at 5 AM. I missed
by a few minutes, but only once. You want to hit the surf early in the
morning and late in the evening to avoid getting cooked. The sun is
intense at mid day, very intense.
|
This is about the flattest I have ever seen it on the
north side of the bay. Our first 2 days were 3 to 4 feet. This is probably
the evening of the 2nd day since we surfed till after dark the afternoon
we got there. Later in the week there were some big breakers out there
in this same spot.
|
If you see it like this at 5 AM, you want to gulp down
the coffee and get out there quick. Those are 4 to 5 foot lines and
REAL fun on a longboard. Most folks began to show up as we were heading
in for breakfast at 8:30 AM.
|
This is Playa Garza, just on the other side of the south
point you see in the early morning picture of Nosara Bay above. It was
breaking 6 to 8 feet this day on the outside reef, but it stays pretty
calm where the boats are moored. The north end of this bay looked like
it might be fun, but we didn't surf here.
|
We surfed every morning from about 5:30 until about
8:30, and every evening from 3:00 until dark. I missed 3 sessions due
to a fin cut, but my surf partner hit them all. It comes down pretty
fast, but every now and then you get a long one that takes you way off
down the beach.
