Almost Toes on the Nose Ross

This page is dedicated to "Almost Toes on the Nose" Ross, a regular at 2nd Light and Indiatlantic Boardwalk. Watch out - this guy is totally deaf and nearly blind without his glasses. Ross rides a Glenn Klugel Custom 9'6". His current surfboard sponsor is his Visa Card. Rumors indicate that the name "Almost Toes on the Nose" stems from a psychological block that prevents him from going those last few inches forward to actually get his toes over the nose. Says Ross: "It's pretty scary up there when you look down at 20 mph and don't see any surfboard underneath you." Ross often surfs at ESA and NSSA contests just to the north or south of the contest area. In a recent interview Ross claimed: "Although I have never won a trophy, I have never heard them ask me to leave the area either." Ross is best known for perpetually spouting HOT AIR about upcoming surf conditions.

The following 5 surf shots were taken on May 26 and May 30, 2006, in Nosara, Costa Rica:

Every morning was like surfing a hurricane swell in Florida. It was a touch too big for me, so I usually waited for the smaller sets.

This is the tail end of a long, long ride. That's Blake Viesins paddling out about 20 feet away.

I usually passed up the bigger sets, but finally got tired of waiting. The kids were just killing these waves on their shortboards. I
don't think I got very far on this one, but the drop was real fun. I did several of these before breaking my leash for a long swim in.

For the 5 days, shoulders like this were hard to find. But for the last three days the angle changed and it became longboard heaven.

When it dropped down to the 4 to 5 foot range like this, it was much more fun for me on my giant Glenn Klugel 9'6".

Oct 3, 2007 at OCs. That's the 10 foot long "Mother of all Repairs" board from the Surfboard Repair Series. Photo by Suzanne.

These 3 frames are from April 18, 2008 at 2nd Light. A real nice 4 to 6 foot day with a moderate chop.

My longboard is thick and boyant to make it easy to catch waves. But in a chop it gets kind of bouncy on that thing.

We had the best April surf I can remember in years. April 18 and still in wet suits!

Glenn Klugel makes home deliveries... (July 7, 2005). This is the replacement for my "broken in half 5 times"
board featured in the surfboard repair articles. This monster is 9'6" long, over 3" thick, and has three
layers of cloth on the deck with two layers on the bottom. It also has three layers of cloth around the fin boxes.
Without the fin, it weighs in at less than 14 pounds. Thanks Glenn - I love it!

Rosso's Rule - For every shark you see, there are 100 that you don't.

Rosso's Theorem - You are much more likely to be struck by lightning than eaten by a shark.

Rosso's Wisdom - If you are the first surfer out, give the second surfer a big smile - he just reduced (by 50 percent) the probability that you would be the one to be bitten by a shark.

Rosso's Famous Quote - An optimist is a longboarder who parks 100 yards out past all the other longboarders. A TRUE optimist is a shortboarder who parks 100 yards out past the optimist.

Rosso's Song -

Rosso Surfer met a Sharko,
swimming in the sea.
Said Rosso Surfer to the Sharko,
"Are you after me?"
Said the Sharko to Rosso Surfer,
"Longboards upset my tummy."
Said Rosso Surfer to the Sharko,
"You'll find shortboards much more yummy!"
